Springtime is on its way.

It will soon be time to plant your gardens, clean the grill and put those sweaters away. The bulbs are poking up in the front beds and we are planning a patio makeover of sorts.

The most exciting news is the birth of Jay and Elizabeth's daughter Alice Goodwin Frein (8 pounds; 21") on Friday February 3rd.
 
Looking ahead on the calendar of events.

• Upcoming Wine Dinners to feature cuisines of Portugal (Tuesday, March 14) and Morocco (Tuesday, April 11). Make your reservations now.
• A reminder that we will be closed for the observance of Memorial Day: Sunday brunch May 28, Monday May 29 and for dinner Tuesday May 30th. Enjoy the long weekend.

Local Dining:
We celebrated the holidays this year with dinner at Parisa's Persian restaurant on Nolensville Rd. and recommend the hummus, grilled eggplant appetizers, mixed grill entree and the rose petal ice cream.

Other staff favorites include: Hot Kabobs, Back to Cuba, Kien Gang and Sevala's.
 
Restaurant Recommendations:

• Barbuto, NYC: By far the best meal Margot and Heather sampled on their recent weekend getaway. Polenta with wild mushroom sauce and braised lamb rib.  Also olive oil ice cream at Mario Batali's pizzeria Otto and ramen dishes at the east village noodle shop momofuko.
• A 16: San Francisco, CA. Sous chef Tandy Wilson and wife Anne praise this small Italian bistro for its house made cured meats and simple pasta dishes.
• Inn at Blackberry Farms: Walland, TN. Linecook/server Matt Davidson's mother is the pastry chef at this Inn with nationally known chef John Fleer.
• While on vacation in Maui, Margot and Heather visited the Surfing Goat Dairy. Look for some of their award winning cheeses on the spring menu.

Celebrity sighting:
Willard Scott paid us a visit recently for brunch. It was a real thrill to have the TODAY show weatherman, and the first ever Ronald McDonald in the house.
